Diagnosis is Visibility - Specialization at work for Women’s Health

Image
In the landscape of modern medicine, the most challenging cases often converge at the intersection of different specialized conditions. For women living with systemic autoimmune conditions, the path from diagnosis to life-saving interventions like organ transplantation is full of invisible risks.

In complex cases, multidisciplinary collaboration becomes the primary tool for survival. Our series explored these high-stakes scenarios, demonstrating how data-guided medicine transforms complex female health journeys from precarious to stable.

Run to the diagnosis: Autoimmunity for Women's health

The Challenge: SLE often carries a distinct serologic signature that can evolve into severe complications. It is a chronic, multisystem autoimmune disease and because it can affect nearly any organ system, it is often referred to as "the great imitator," presenting with highly variable clinical features that can range from mild to life-threatening. It predominantly affects women of childbearing age, with a female-to-male ratio of approximately 9:1.

Shining Light on the Unseen: Hemostasis and Women’s Care

The Challenge: Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) is a cornerstone of complexity in women's health, demanding a constant balance between preventing recurrent thrombosis and managing bleeding risks during procedures. Specialized testing is essential for tailoring lifelong anticoagulation strategies and monitoring patients through high-risk clinical events. Secondary APS has a prevalence of female to male ratio often cited at 7:1, mirroring the strong female bias of the underlying SLE.

Beyond Compatibility: Transfusion's Role in Women's Health and Patient Safety

The Challenge: In women with a history of autoimmune diseases compatible blood is rarely straightforward. The diagnosis with Positive direct antiglobulin tests (DAT) of warm autoantibody interference require extended immunohematology workups to ensure safe transfusion without triggering further hemolysis. Women account for approximately 60% to 67% of all AIHA cases.

When Giving Means Life: Transplantation and Women's Care

The Challenge: For women with end-stage organ failure and high sensitization from prior HLA exposure, transplantation is a significant challenge. Success relies on high-resolution HLA typing and Single Antigen Bead (SAB) testing to map donor-specific antibodies (DSA) and guide peri-transplant immunosuppression. In cohorts of transplant recipients with SLE, women represent approximately 81% to 87% of the population.

When Every Second Counts: Acute Care for Women’s health

The Challenge: During major surgery, women with complex histories often face a "coagulation paradox": a high risk for thrombosis paired with unexpected diffuse bleeding. Instead of empiric blood product transfusion, near-patient testing that help provide real-time data on fibrinogen levels and clot firmness, allow for targeted, life-saving bleeding management in critical care.

Diagnosis is Visibility served as the guiding principle for our 2026 International Women’s Day campaign under the theme #GiveToGain.

In the most complex clinical scenarios, our collective expertise does more than provide data—it provides a path forward. By bringing together specialized diagnostics in Hemostasis, Acute Care, Autoimmunity, Transfusion, and Transplant, we are uniquely positioned to Power Patient Care when it matters most.

Let’s continue making a difference together—raising awareness, refining outcomes, and ensuring that even the most "invisible" risks are seen and managed.
